Pre- Programme Assessment
Input: A series of up-front assessments which include the following,
- COTW 360-degree feedback online assessment
- DiSC behavioural Profile: Optional but we consider this to be a key component of the programme
Assessments to be organised 2 months prior to start of programme and staggered
Delivery
4 Days
1 full day
6 x half day sessions online
Module 7 will be delivered 3 months after last delivery day – Half day online: Impact and Reflection
We’ve not included anything on coaching and mentoring at this stage as we don’t know what you have already put in place but would recommend that coaching as a leadership style be included
Duration
Approx. 2 to 4 weeks between modules so 2 to 5 months (excluding the 3 month gap to module 7)
Delivery will include 1 day face to face workshop for /event for Module 1 followed by 6 virtual online workshops.
NB – Modules 5 & 6 could be delivered in a single day in a face to face format if this was thought to be appropriate.
Objective
The programme will help support existing managers and leaders in consolidating their the skills, behaviours and mindset required to be effective in their management and leadership roles as well as cementing consistency in approach.
Outcomes
To be agreed in consultation but can include the following:-
- They will not only understand leadership models but learn how to positively apply them;
- Heightened Self-Awareness -They will understand themselves , the way they behave and how this impacts on others
- Greater understanding of their own strengths and how to use them to deliver high performance through others;
- Support team members toward expert practice
- Communicate more effectively with team members and colleagues both verbally and non verbally
- Recognise the level of psychological safety within their own work environment
- Confidently choose techniques and practices from within their personal toolbox
- Be able to build a leadership playbook incorporating best practice;
- Be able to build a peer support network;
- Be able to reflect on and review ongoing practice for continual improvement.
Module 1: Understanding myself and others – the building blocks of understanding you and your team.
This full day session will incorporate the results of the 360 and DISC questionnaires. It asks the new manager to consider who they are at work, what are they like to work with and how others perceive and experience them? On the flip side it focuses your new manager on difference at work, building their understanding of different people/behavioural styles at work, how to flex and improve their ability to work with others (especially colleagues they find more tricky) and how to utilise colleagues differences as a strength. The module covers:
- The behavioural styles tool DiSC and how to use it to understand your own preferences/approach to work and how to improve communication and the ability to work with people who are different to you.
- Emotional Intelligence as a key aspect of being an effective manager. How emotionally intelligent are you? What are you doing to address and develop your EI and understanding EI as a cornerstone principle of effective people management.
Module 2: The Experienced Leader and Their Own Expert Practice Viewed Through The Lens of Leadership Styles & Theories.
This half-day session examines how leaders become experts and maintain expert levels in their practice. We will look at how the leader develops their team into experts. This transition from, in some cases, novice to expert will require leaders to understand how to develop, motivate, and reward their teams. It checks their current occupational competency and leadership behaviours in role. A retrospective feeding in the results of the 360 degree analysis and building on this through examination of the 4 dimensions of expert practice.
The session covers:
- The four dimensions of expert practice – reflection in, on, beyond, and before practice.
- The core ability of reflective practice when considering effective leadership.
Module 3: Leadership Communication & Influence – Listening to Communicate
This half-day builds on the communication workshop in the new manager programme. It will use the experiences of the cohort to reflect on their own behaviours and those of their team during communication. It explores the importance of managing up and across the the organisation for more experienced leaders.
The session covers:
- The psychology of interpersonal communication. After considering the principles of Transactional Analysis the group will complete an ego gram on themselves that will be discussed in terms of workplace practice.
- Non-verbal communication. The group will be encouraged to examine their own unconscious knowledge of how they and others communicate without speaking. We will look at how our use of time and space can help us to communicate more effectively.
- Communication red flags, by being aware of early warning behaviours leaders should be able to reduce or negate conflict caused by poor or miscommunication
Module 4: Psychological Safety in The Workplace
This half-day session introduces these experienced leaders to the notion of psychological safety. This is one of the most important factors in building high performing teams. If people feel comfortable and safe there are no barriers to high performance.
The session covers
- What is meant by psychological safety both in work and in the wider world
- The role leaders play in introducing, maintaining, and enforcing the concept within their teams
Module 5: Strategic Thinking and Decision Making
Looks at developing strategic plans matching your actions to the long term objectives of the organisation so they are both aligned. How do you plan strategically and make decisions when there is uncertainty and ambiguity in a ‘VUCA’ working environment
Module 6: Use your ‘playbook’ to fill up your leadership toolbox
This half-day session looks at leadership theories and models directly linked to workplace practice.

- John Adair’s Action Centred Leadership, Blake & Mouton’s managerial grid.
- Followership
- Confidence
- Gravitas
- The final part of the session looks at how you can correctly choose what to take out of your toolbox and when to put it back!
Module 7: Half Day Session Evaluating the Impact
This session gives the opportunity for learners to reflect on their time back at the workplace and assess how well they’ve retained their learning, how well they’ve applied it and if well what impact has it had on them their teams and the organisation.
