Are We Doing Enough to Support Women in Leadership?

Future Women Leaders

With increasing political polarisation, and extreme views are gaining traction, the role of leadership has never been more critical. With figures like Donald Trump shaping global discourse, decisions made thousands of miles away are having ripple effects across businesses, economies, and societies worldwide. Against this backdrop, it’s crucial to ask: are we doing enough to support women in leadership and how can we effectively support the next generation of leaders, particularly women, in navigating these turbulent times?

At Call of the Wild, we are passionate about leadership development and creating environments where future leaders can thrive. As part of Wales Week in London 2025, we are hosting an exclusive event, Supporting Future Leaders: Women in Leadership, bringing together a powerhouse panel to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing women in leadership today.

The Challenges Women Face in Leadership Today

From political shifts to economic uncertainty, women in leadership must navigate a rapidly changing landscape. The gender pay gap, underrepresentation in boardrooms, and systemic barriers to career progression remain persistent issues. However, the rise of extreme political ideologies, particularly those challenging diversity, equality and inclusion, means that now more than ever, we need resilient, empowered female leaders who can shape a more balanced future.

Creating Pathways for Future Leaders

To truly support the next generation, we must move beyond discussion and into action. This means:

  • Mentorship & Sponsorship – Encouraging established leaders to actively mentor and advocate for emerging talent.
  • Equal Access to Opportunities – Ensuring women have the same access to leadership development programmes, boardroom positions, and funding as their male counterparts.
  • Challenging Bias & Systemic Barriers – Tackling unconscious bias in hiring, promotion, and workplace culture.
  • Encouraging Confidence & Ambition – Empowering young women to see themselves as leaders and providing them with the tools to get there.

The Importance of Diversity & Inclusion in Leadership Development

At a time when division is rife, inclusive leadership is essential. Leaders who embrace diversity create stronger, more adaptable organisations. Yet, without proactive efforts to develop women from all backgrounds, we risk reinforcing the status quo. True diversity means going beyond gender and considering race, socio-economic background, disability, and neurodiversity in leadership pipelines.

Learning from Industry Leaders

Our panel of experts at Supporting Future Leaders: Women in Leadership will share their insights, experiences, and strategies for overcoming barriers and driving meaningful change:

  • Dr. Carol Bell – Non-Executive Director at Bonheur ASA, BlackRock Energy & Resources Income Trust, and FA Wales
  • Sharon James-Evans – Principal of Cardiff and Vale College, Board Member at Wales Millennium Centre and Cardiff Business Club
  • Denise Lewis Poulton – Trustee of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, NED at S4C, and former Group Director of Corporate Affairs at Orange plc
  • Chair: Robert Lloyd Griffiths OBE – Director for ICAEW Wales

What’s Next?

If we are to counter the growing challenges posed by political and social shifts, we must commit to long-term, systemic change. This means businesses, policymakers, and individuals all playing their part in supporting future leaders. Our event is just one step in the wider movement towards gender equality in leadership, but by coming together, sharing experiences, and taking action, we can build a stronger, more inclusive future.
