Insights from the Walking the Talk podcast with Robert Lloyd Griffiths OBE
What are the five qualities of a great leader? It’s a question that underpins every leadership journey – and one explored in depth in the Walking the Talk podcast, hosted by Robert Lloyd Griffiths OBE.
In a recent episode, our guest shared five defining leadership qualities that separate good leaders from great ones. These insights go beyond skills and strategy – they’re about the human side of leadership: how we connect, communicate, and inspire others.
1. Communication: The Cornerstone of Great Leadership
“I’ve never seen a good leader who was a bad communicator.”
Communication is the foundation of great leadership. Effective leaders don’t just talk – they listen, clarify, and ensure everyone feels heard. Strong communication builds trust, drives collaboration, and ensures that teams understand both the vision and their role in achieving it.
2. A Lack of Hubris
Hubris – the belief that status or title entitles someone to behave without accountability – is the downfall of many leaders. The best leaders display humility. They’re open to feedback, value their teams’ perspectives, and understand that respect must be earned, not demanded.
3. Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
Emotional intelligence is now recognised as one of the most accurate predictors of leadership success. It’s the ability to understand and manage emotions – both your own and others’. Leaders with high EQ foster trust, navigate challenges with empathy, and create psychologically safe environments where people can thrive.
4. The Courage to Admit When You’re Wrong
Great leaders aren’t afraid to say, “I got it wrong.” Admitting mistakes shows vulnerability and integrity – two qualities that strengthen credibility and build psychological safety within teams. It demonstrates that learning and progress matter more than pride.
5. Recognising and Rewarding Success
Recognition is one of the simplest yet most powerful leadership tools. A sincere “thank you” or acknowledgment of effort can have a lasting impact. The key is understanding how each individual prefers to be recognised – some value quiet appreciation, others thrive on public praise. Great leaders know the difference.
Communication and Emotional Intelligence: The Non-Negotiables
While all five qualities of a great leader matter, two are absolutely essential: communication and emotional intelligence. Without them, even the most talented leaders will struggle to inspire or sustain long-term success.
The good news? Both can be developed. At Call of the Wild, our leadership development programmes focus on building these capabilities through experiential learning – helping leaders communicate with clarity, act with empathy, and lead with purpose.
